Geneseo SEX[Ed] interns are the glue that holds our program together. If you’re into making a difference and getting hands-on experience with sexual health education, think about joining the program as an intern! Not only will you gain some valuable skills and knowledge along the way, but you’ll be creating a safer and healthier environment for Geneseo students now and in the future.
Passionate and committed, interns take part in a number of activities designed to spread the word about sexual and reproductive health on campus. These include:
– Working with faculty, staff, and student organizations (e.g., culture clubs, interest-based groups, Greek organizations) to deliver workshops addressing a wide range of sexual health-related topics (e.g., safer sex and STI/HIV prevention, contraception, reproductive justice, body positivity, pleasure, hooking up).
– Designing educational and outreach materials.
– Conducting outreach (e.g., tabling).
– Creating content for the program website and social media accounts.
– Assisting with special events (e.g., World AIDS Day celebrations).
– Delivering safer sex kits to residence halls.
We’d love to have you join us. Check out our FAQ to find out how!
We’re ideally looking for students who are:
– Comfortable with public speaking (e.g., delivering workshops) and outreach (e.g., tabling in the student union)
– Comfortable talking about sex, as well as sexual and reproductive health
– Friendly and non-judgmental
– Reliable
– Committed to the idea that everyone is entitled to sexual health, reproductive justice, pleasure, and connection with others.
If you have these qualities…we hope that you’ll consider applying!
– The experience you’ll gain from being an intern would be attractive to graduate programs in sociology, public health, psychology, sociomedical sciences, and communications, among others. It’s also a great option for those applying to clinical graduate programs (e.g., medical school, nursing programs).
– Interns who enter the workforce directly after graduation will be a good fit for jobs related to social work, human services, education, public health, public policy, and social justice advocacy.
– You’ll develop skills in public speaking, social science research, designing materials used for educational workshops and outreach, advocacy, and event planning.
– You’ll get fantastic knowledge about relevant sexual health topics that can directly benefit you and others that you know.
– You’ll be contributing to the health and wellbeing of the entire SUNY Geneseo community.
– You can earn up to three SOCL credits per semester.
– You’ll be able to get to know and hang out with students who are as passionate about sexual health and reproductive justice as you are!
All potential interns will be required to take SOCL 281, Sociology of Sexual Health, with Dr. Amy Braksmajer prior to applying. Once that course has been completed, students may email Dr. Braksmajer (abraksmajer@geneseo.edu) with a brief statement explaining why you are interested in applying, if you have any relevant coursework or experience, and how being an intern might help you after you graduate from Geneseo. Dr. Braksmajer will then interview students who she feels may be a good fit for Geneseo SEX[Ed].
