What is Geneseo SEX[Ed]?

Research shows that when college students want to learn about sex and sexual health, they’d rather learn about it from other students who understand what they’re going through.  That’s where we come in!  Geneseo SEX[Ed] is a peer-led program focused on sexual and reproductive health education.

We are unique in that we take a broad view of what counts as sexual health.  Wo do address topics that are traditionally included in comprehensive sex education programs, such as information about STI/HIV testing and treatment, safer sex, and contraception…but we don’t stop there! We also provide information about topics like body positivity, sex positivity, pleasure, communication, reproductive justice, intersectionality, porn literacy, and lots of other things that allow us to experience sexuality with pleasure, curiosity, and connection with others. In other words, we don’t just tell people how to reduce their sexual risks – instead, we focus on teaching people information and skills that will allow them to live fulfilling and autonomous sexual lives.

Finally, we take a social justice-oriented approach to sexual health education, looking at how society shapes how we understand and experience sexuality and sexual health as well as the social systems that contribute to STIs, HIV, and unwanted pregnancies. We also seek to reach students that have been left out of or been marginalized by traditional programs (e.g., LGTQIA+, BIPOC, disabled students), because we believe that sexual health and pleasure should be available to all!

We’re really excited about this initiative and the impact it can have on our campus community. Let’s make sure everyone has access to the knowledge and resources they need for safer and healthier sex.  Keep an eye out for us on social media and around campus – and stay tuned for more updates!
