New School Secretary … and More

Frances Brown in school office

Frances Brown began as the school secretary, serving 42 years until 1954. Campus legend has that she did it all: preparing and filing the principals’ papers and monthly reports, sorting mail, answering prospective students’ requests, scheduling classes, and keeping the books for some student organizations.

Watson Clark Became Janitor

Watson Clark

The school’s first—and at the time only—janitor L.C. Morey retired after 37 years (a retirement evidently hastened in part because he acted as if he owned the school). Morey was replaced by L. Watson Clark, who served as supervising janitor until his retirement in 1949 and for whom the Clark Maintenance Building was named.
